Causes of Arthritis

The exact cause of arthritis is unknown, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Certain genetic factors increase the risk of developing the condition, while lifestyle factors such as obesity, smoking, and poor diet can also play a role. Injury to the joints can also lead to the development of arthritis.

Treatments for Arthritis

The goal of treatment for arthritis is to reduce pain and inflammation, improve mobility, and prevent further joint damage.

Treatment options include lifestyle changes, such as losing weight and exercising regularly; medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids; and physical therapy.

In some cases, surgery may be necessary to repair or replace damaged joints.

How You Can Lessen Arthritis Pain

There are general techniques or practices that may decrease the pain and irritation associated with arthritis.

These can include:

  • Regularly exercising, with a focus on strengthening the muscles and circulation around the areas most affected by the arthritic condition
  • Avoiding alcohol and cigarettes, which may lead to inflammation or other negative secondary causes of pain

No matter what type of arthritis pain you are experiencing, there are treatments available to help reduce your symptoms and improve your quality of life. The arthritis experts at Southeast Regional Pain Center will help you find out which treatment is best for you.

Remember, Step One is to get a referral from your physician or doctor.  We cannot treat your arthritis pain without a referral!
