The Data on American Suffering from Migraines is Staggering

Each year, millions of Americans suffer from migraine headaches. There is a significant amount of data that is important to study if one wants to understand the scope of migraine

  1. According to the American Migraine Foundation, approximately 12% of the United States population, or 36 million people, suffer from migraine headaches, with women being affected three times more than men. These individuals experience migraines at various ages, although the majority of migraine sufferers are between the ages of 25 and 55
  2. A study conducted by the National Headache Foundation surveyed more than 6,000 migraine sufferers in the United States and found that the average age of sufferers was 41.5 years old. The study also found that the prevalence of migraine headaches increases with age. The highest prevalence of migraine headaches was found among those aged 45 to 54, followed by those aged 30 to 44 and then those aged 55 to 64.
  3. The American Migraine Foundation also conducted a study in 2016 to assess the prevalence of migraine headaches among adolescents between the ages of 10 and 17. The study found that 6.3% of adolescents experienced migraine headaches. The study also found that migraine prevalence among adolescents was higher in girls than in boys (7.8% vs. 4.9%)

In addition to these studies, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducted a study in 2017 to assess the prevalence of migraine headaches among adults aged 18 and older in the United States. The study found that 18.2% of adults experienced migraine headaches. The study also found that migraine prevalence among adults was higher in women than in men (21.6% vs. 15.1%).

 

Overall, it is estimated that approximately 36 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. The majority of migraine sufferers are between the ages of 25 and 55, with the prevalence of migraine headaches increasing with age. In addition, the prevalence of migraine headaches is higher in women than in men.

What is a Migraine Headache?
