Sciatica Pain Affects the Longest Nerve in the Body, the Sciatic Nerve

The longest nerve in the body is the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the rear/buttocks all the way down the leg to the foot Sciatica pain often fe feels like:

burning sensation or pins and needles sensation in the lower back, leg or buttock regions

• Numbness in the lower back, leg or buttock regions
• Weakness in the lower back, leg or buttock regions

If you are feeling the symptoms of sciatica pain, know that sciatica is the symptom itself.

You may be experiencing varying degrees of leg pain. from shooting. acute pain to cramping to painful sensations that are hard to capture with words. You may teelit while standing, sitting, bending, or moving: it may be extremely painful to cough or sneeze. sciatica can be completely debilitating.

Causes of Sciatica

When there is pressure or the sciatic nerve is pinched or compressed in any way, the result can be severe and intense pain.  Some of the causes of sciatica are:

  • A herniated or bulging disc, which is the most common cause of sciatica.
  • Bone spurs in the spine which pinches or compresses nerves
  • “Spondylolisthesis”, or the narrowing of the nerve opening caused by vertebral slippage
  • “Piriformis syndrome”, which results when the piriformis muscle in the buttocks spasms or compresses and causes iirritation on the the sciatic nerve
  • Narrowing of the spinal canal, also known as “spinal stenosis”
  • Pregnancy-related irritation or pressure placed on the sciatic nerve

Treatments for Sciatica

A custom treatment plan for sciatica may include both physical therapy and medication. At our sciatica pain center, we may recommend and provide spinal injections to reduce inflammation. This can improve mobility and decrease pressure on the nerves surrounding the sciatic nerve.

How You Can Avoid Sciatica or Lessen the Pain

There are general techniques or practices that may decrease the pain and irritation associated with sciatica.

These can include:

  • Avoiding extended sitting periods and practicing good posture as much as possible, sitting, standing and sleeping
  • Regularly exercising, with a focus on strengthening your core and back muscles and increasing flexibility
  • Keeping your body weight at a healthy level to reduce any potential negative impacts of body weight that can compress the nerves
  • Avoiding alcohol and cigarettes, which may lead to inflammation or disc degeneration or other negative secondary causes of pain

No matter what type of sciatica or other nerve pain you are experiencing, there are treatments available to help reduce your symptoms and improve your quality of life. The sciatica experts at Southeast Regional Pain Center will help you find out which treatment is best for you.

Remember, Step One is to get a referral from your physician or doctor.  We cannot treat your sciatica without a referral!
